Tips for a great portrait session
For a family portrait- You’ll want to coordinate everyone’s clothing. You might decide to wear matching outfits (e.g., black shirts
with khaki pants), or you might be more subtle, coordinating clothes around a common color theme (jeans and jean skirts for grown-up,
jean overalls for toddlers) and tops that go well together in a small range of one color. (maybe a mix of blue and navy.)
Think
About the kind of picture that you want.
The key is to dress accordingly. Pick clothes appropriate to the portrait's setting.
A beach
setting lends itself to casual clothing like shorts and casual shirts, or jeans and sweaters. An indoor portrait lends itself more
to formal or semi-formal attire.
1. Avoid patterns and overly-bright colors. They distract from your face.
2. Avoid
clothes with writing on them
3. Avoid white if possible especially if you won’t be wearing a jacket.
A little color, or at least an off white shirt, is best.
4. Go for a look that is slimming
*Go for
dark colors instead of light colors
*Solid colors are slimming instead of bold patterns
*A single color from head to toe is slimming.
*Vertical lines are slimming; horizontal lines are not.
*The v-neck shape for tops is slimming.
*Single-breasted jackets are more slimming than double-breasted.
6. If you wear a tie go with a solid color or simple striped.
A minimal pattern is best.
8. If you
don’t wear your glasses all the time take them off for the picture,
and early enough to get rid of any glass marks.
For a baby portrait- Have ready: hats and head bands, a few baby blankets and their favorite toy. Make sure they had their
nap and eaten before the session so they are well rested and happy.
Get a good night’s sleep, have fun, come with a great attitude,
and above all, enjoy your portrait session. The result will be a portrait you’ll be happy to hang in your home for years to come.
